Wanted: Communications superstar!

FCA is hiring a Communications Manager. Could it be you?

You don’t need to be a public health expert: we’re looking for someone who supports our cause, is inspired to work with members from organisations large and small across the globe and who can develop a vision for our communications, then roll up their sleeves and make it come true.

You will be a key part of a small team that is itself part of a larger movement fighting the consequences of tobacco use and other risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

You will work daily with policy and advocacy colleagues to develop materials, and consult regularly with regional coordinators, FCA members and partners around the world. You will have ample freedom to put your ideas into practice; in return, you must demonstrate pretzel-like flexibility:  you could be called on to at the last minute to participate in a new working group or join a call where everyone else is in other time zones. (Note: you will soon become an expert in time zones – and should be willing to experience most of them.)

Responsibilities

After updating the communications strategy you will need to:

  •     Ensure that the FCA website (fctc.org) and social media channels are always current
  •     Update members regularly about our work and other developments in global tobacco control
  •     Provide communications support to our regional coordinators
  •     Manage FCA’s listservs and email system
  •     Develop relationships with global media and occasionally draft op-ed articles
  •     Manage communications for World No Tobacco Day (31 May) and other major events on the global public health calendar
  •     Create and manage a communications strategy for sessions of the FCTC Conference of the Parties, meetings that usually happen every two years and where you will be required to:
  1.         develop and lead a proactive media campaign in the host country, including a press conference
  2.         assemble and manage a team of 4 or 5 who put together a daily newsletter nightly during the event
  3.         update FCA’s online channels continually.
  •     Monitor the media and online world for risks to FCA’s brand and reputation, including from the tobacco industry
  •     Provide ad hoc communications support to colleagues, board members and other partners, often at little notice. (Remember the pretzel-like flexibility?)

What you possess

  •     Excellent writing and editing abilities
  •     Hands-on experience with a CMS: we use Joomla
  •     Experience posting to social media and managing communities
  •     Experience working internationally, including cross-cultural awareness
  •     Some knowledge of global public health and the UN system
  •     Fluency in English; fluency in one or more other UN languages is a strong asset
  •     Experience managing document production: from editing to translation, design, publication and dissemination
  •     Excellent time management skills and the ability to shift focus quickly when priorities change
  •     Political sensitivity, as this work could requires collaborating with governments
  •     Willingness to contribute meaningfully to processes and / or activities as required.
