FCTC: Action Now! Campaign
- March 15, 2012
The World Health Organization hosted a special meeting of the UN Ad Hoc Interagency Task Force on Tobacco Control 27-28 February 2012 in Geneva.
According to WHO, the main objective of the meeting was to strengthen the multisectoral and interagency response to needs related to global implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
The meeting highlighted areas where the need for an interagency response has been clearly established, such as taxation of tobacco products and smoke-free public places. It also noted where the need for collaboration is rapidly emerging, such as illicit trade of tobacco products, alternatives to tobacco growing and trade-related aspects of tobacco control.
Particular emphasis was placed on overarching aspects of the interagency response such as supporting national coordinating mechanism and integrating implementation of the WHO FCTC into the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) at the country level.
