Financing the fight against NCDs

NCD Alliance Executive Director Katie DainIn 2011, non-government organisations (NGOs) provided more aid to fight non-communicable diseases (NCDs) than did bilateral donors.

And they gave almost as much as multilateral organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), according to a new article in The Lancet Diabetes Endocrinology.

What can be done to assure sustainable financing to combat NCDs, which cause 49.8 percent of death and disability in low- and middle-income countries, asks the article's author Katie Dain, executive director of the NCD Alliance.

She makes three suggestions:

1. Collect better data on current resources going into the NCDs fight;
2. Create a comprehensive investment framework to ensure strategic use of scarce resources;
3. While the global community has recognised the importance of domestic revenue sources, such as tobacco taxation, donors must provide catalytic funding.
