Eduardo BiancoFCA’s Regional Director for the Americas, Eduardo Bianco, has been awarded the Luther L Terry Award for Exemplary Leadership in Tobacco Control.

The award is presented annually by the American Cancer Society and is named for the late US Surgeon General who led the 1964 report that linked tobacco use to long cancer and other illnesses.

FCA joins Action/2015 push for global health measures

FCA is joining hundreds of global organisations in launching the Action/2015 campaign to call for health measures (including tobacco control) to be included in the new global goals for human development.

In joining the Action/2015 campaign FCA released a video (below) stressing that health must become a global priority.

2015 crucial for the future of the FCTC and tobacco control

The webinar featured four speakers, who addressed topics including the recent UN Secretary-General’s synthesis report on the new development goals.

Smoking declines in Ukraine


An ad for Ukraine's smoke-free lawDaily smoking prevalence has decreased for both men and women in Ukraine, according to a survey carried out in October.

Prevalence for men declined almost 3 percent (from 45% to 42%), and for women 2 percentage points (from 11 to 9%), found the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, working with “Advocacy Center LIFE”, an FCA member.

The results also show that the average maximum retail price, written on the packs of cigarettes increased from 8.95 Ukrainian Hryvnia in February 2013 to 12.21 UAH in October 2014.

Proposal would keep tobacco taxes dangerously low

Graphic shows taxes rising, smoking droppingThe Eurasian Economic Commission is considering adopting a tobacco tax harmonization proposal through the (EEC). If adopted the tobacco tax proposal would leave prices of tobacco products in the region among the lowest in the world, keeping cigarettes cheap and plentiful for young smokers.

The proposal would also undermine all EEC countries’ strong support of FCTC Article 6 at this year’s COP, as well as Russia’s commitment to bring taxes on tobacco products in line with standards set in the Euro region, says a letter from FCA and partner organisations released 10 November 2014.

Speakers at FCA's seminar on Article 6 at COP6, 2014.On Monday 13 October, FCA held a technical lunch-time seminar at COP6 on the topic of implementation of Article 6 (price and tax measures). The seminar, which was co-hosted by the Department of Finance of the Philippines and the Federal Revenue Secretariat of Brazil, aimed at promoting the adoption of Article 6 guidelines by showcasing several success stories of long-term tax policies.
