The Global Health Council (GHC) has awarded Dr Monika Arora its prestigious Best Practices in Global Health 2011 award for her health promotion work amongst adolescents through a non-profit based in India.

The non-profit - Health Related Information Dissemination Amongst Youth (HRIDAY) – works to promote health awareness amongst school and college students in India. HRIDAY is also an FCA member.

The NCD Summit: a window of opportunity

It was a privilege and honour for me to represent FCA’s continuing labour and innovative strategies in effective implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) at the Informal Interactive Civil Society Hearing on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at the United Nations General Assembly last week.

I want to share with you selected highlights of the day and discuss potential next steps for FCA action in the now short run-up to the September High-level Meeting on NCDs (often called the NCD Summit).

US releases graphic package warnings

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 21 June announced the final nine picture-based warnings that will appear on the top 50 per cent of the front and back of cigarette packages.

The warnings include a toll-free quit line number. As of 22 Sept. 2012, manufacturers will not be able to manufacture cigarettes without the new warnings on packaging, and as of 22 Oct. 2012, manufacturers will not be able to distribute cigarettes without the new warnings on packaging.

Benin holds capacity-building workshop

On 16-17 June, The Initiative for Education and Tobacco Control (IECT) organised a two-day workshop to strengthen the capacity of non-government organisations (NGOs) to support tobacco control in Benin. 

The event was held with the financial support of the African Tobacco Control Alliance, technical support from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (the Union) and in collaboration with the Benin Ministry of Health.

Bolivia set for pictorial warnings

The Bolivian Government has announced that cigarette packages sold in Bolivia will have pictorial warnings by December 2011.

The warnings will cover 50 per cent of both the front and back of packages.

Meeting with FCTC COP Secretariat

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with Observer status to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Conference of the Parties (COP) were invited to a meeting with the COP Secretariat (FCS) on 20 May.

Framework Convention Alliance (FCA) attended the discussion, which focused on how civil society could help advance the decisions taken at COP-4 in 2010.

INB working group to meet 4-8 July

The first session of the informal working group (WG) of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) on a Protocol on Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products will be held 4-8 July in Geneva. A second session is scheduled for either the first or third week of October.

ASH report reveals big tobacco's shady dealings

ASH Tobacconomics report imageThe tobacco industry is using pseudo economic arguments to: divert attention away from smoking’s health consequences; block new health regulations; and ultimately protect its revenues, says a new Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) report.

Tobacco companies have a long history of misleading politicians and the public. As understanding developed of the adverse effects smoking has on life expectancy and well-being, industry pro-tobacco arguments diversified.

UN Summit on NCDs countdown

The UN High-level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), aka the NCD Summit, is coming up, and to mark this date the NCD Alliance launched its ‘100 Days of Action” campaign along with a daily countdown ticker (see above).

FCA members receive WNTD awards

Many FCA members received World No Tobacco Day awards for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control.

Awards were presented in each of the WHO’s six regions -  Africa, the Americas, South-East Asia, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, Western Pacific. Click Read More to watch an image slideshow of the winners.
