Tobacco industry influences Spain's weak smoke-free law

The tobacco industry has undermined smoke-free legislation in Spain and is trying to promote it in other countries, according to a new study published in Tobacco Control. The study, Legislating Tolerance: Spain’s National Public Smoking Law, outlines the tobacco industry’s efforts from the 1980s to early 2000 to influence smoke-free policies in Spain. Spain’s 2006 law allows separate seating sections and ventilation options in public places such as bars and restaurants, hotels, and airports. Spain does not meet the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Article 8 guidelines, which mandate 100% smoke-free legislation.

Adolescents' smoking rates rising

Tobacco use among adolescent girls and water pipe use amongst teenagers may be rising, according to data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS). The results were recently published in Global Health Promotion, which reviewed GYTS data between 1999 and 2008.

Pakistan to have picture health warnings

Pakistan will have pictorial health warnings on all its cigarette packs and outers as of February 2010.

The warnings will be on a yearly rotational basis (or as directed by the government) and imported cigarettes will not be cleared from port unless they bear warnings.

Osun bans public smoking

An inland state of south-western Nigeria, Osun, has banned smoking in public spaces. The ban carries penalties a three to six months jail term and or fines between N10, 000 to N250, 000 (roughly $US66.00 - $US1650.00).
