FCAers worldwide preparing for COP7

08 Oct 2016

For example, FCA coordinator for the Pacific Islands, Annabel Lyman, was in Fiji recently to participate in a multisectoral workshop for Pacific Island countries to promote entry into force of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. Each of the 14 Pacific Island countries that are Parties to the treaty attended and bilateral meetings were held between the Convention Secretariat and WHO regional offices with each country team to discuss progress on the ITP.

Tobacco-Free Pacific 2025

Following that event was a second two-part workshop: Progressing toward Tobacco Free Pacific 2025, under the guidance of the WHO regional offices in Suva and Fiji. Topics for discussion there included: countries’ tobacco control action plans; progress and challenges in tobacco taxation; tobacco industry interference; strengthening health warnings on tobacco products, and tobacco control enforcement. Annabel made a presentation on tobacco industry interference.

The week finished with a preparatory workshop for COP7 where the Convention Secretariat presented a summary of each COP7 document, followed by discussions.

Meanwhile, FCAers attended the High Level Advocacy Forum for Tobacco Control in Maldives on 20 September, organized by the World Health Organization Country Office in collaboration with the national Health Protection Agency.

The event’s purpose was to raise awareness on the dangers of tobacco, to learn from success stories around the region and most importantly, to advocate to decision-makers the importance of tobacco control.

Other COP7 preparations include:

  • FCAers attended the regional committee meeting of the WHO South-east Asia Regional Office (SEARO). FCA’s submission emphasised the important role that tobacco taxation can play in public health – by reducing tobacco consumption – and in generating revenue to finance health and development spending.
  • Executive Director Francis Thompson attended the pre-COP meeting for the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office, in Cairo, where COP7 agenda items were discussed.
  • FCA Regional Coordinator for WPRO, Domilyn Villarreiz, attended the pre-COP meeting for Western Pacific countries. Participants came from Asian countries under WPRO plus Australia and New Zealand.
  • FCA’s coordinator for Africa, Tih Ntiabang, is attending the African regional preparatory meeting for COP7 and the high-level meeting on the implementation of the WHO FCTC, from 10 to 13 October, in Algiers.
