“In other words,” adds the report, “if the Philippines wants to win the war against tobacco, it needs to strengthen its efforts in implementing tobacco control measures”.
The Nigeria report notes that the National Tobacco Control Bill (NTCB) 2009 was passed by the country’s National Assembly on 31 May 2011 and is awaiting the president’s signature.
“With the largest population in Africa, Nigeria’s successful implementation of the FCTC and its protocols portends a major catalyst for Africa and West African countries in particular, to also adopt legal frameworks that will domesticate the FCTC,” says the report.
The Nigeria shadow report was released at a press conference on 6 March, 2012 by the report’s authors Environmental Rights Action (ERA)/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria (FoEN).
