Mauritius leads Africa with cigarette pack warnings

20 Feb 2009

As of June 2009 cigarette packs in Mauritius will carry graphic warning images, making the country the first in Africa to introduce health warnings on cigarette packaging.

The warnings fall under Article 11 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control where Parties agree to adopt effective measures to ensure tobacco product packaging and labeling have large, clear health warnings and do not promote tobacco products in false, misleading or deceptive ways.

Studies have shown that comprehensive warnings on cigarette packages are more likely to be noticed and rated as effective by smokers.

The warnings in Mauritius will take up 65 per cent of the packaging, which is the largest warning in any country so far.
