To fight the tobacco epidemic, governments must provide their tobacco control interventions with relevant information such as: research; scientific assessments; tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke data; and related social, economic and health indicators.

Since the tobacco epidemic is a worldwide problem, spread by an industry that operates globally, research and surveillance must be undertaken and shared at global, regional and local (within each country) levels
