Smoking drops among Dutch kids, youth

20 Feb 2014

“It seems that the common efforts of tobacco control stakeholders in former years, including campaigns, tax increases and smoke-free schoolyard initiatives, are bearing fruit,” said Dewi Segaar, senior consultant, policy and research, at the Alliance Smokefree Holland.

Dewi noted that from 1 January 2014 children under the age of 18 were prohibited from buying tobacco.

“We hope that this will help to further decrease smoking among kids, but the Alliance Smokefree Holland believes this will only happen when there is strong enforcement of this new law, when campaigns continue and when taxes rise substantially on a regular basis,” added Dewi.
