Virtual cardiology congress begins

The International Cardiology Congress on the Internet has begun.

Organized by the Argentine Federation of Cardiology, the congress features a symposium on Tobacco and the Heart organized by the Framework Convention Alliance, World Heart Federation, the South American Cardiology Society and the InterAmerican Heart Foundation.

The symposium explores issues in tobacco cessation and control that are relevant to cardiologists. It will include contributions from leading global experts in tobacco control advocacy and treatment of tobacco dependence.

The symposium is chaired by Uruguayan cardiologist Dr Eduardo Bianco, who is also the president and founding member of the Centre for Research on the Tobacco Epidemic (Centro del Investigation: CIET) and a leading tobacco control advocate in Latin America.

Symposium agenda

1.    The cigarette epidemic: a modern plague by Dr Richard Hurt, Tobacco Dependence Center, Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, USA.
2.    Uruguay and the WHO FCTC by  Dr Tabaré Vázquez, President of Uruguay.
3.    Tobacco Consumption and Cardiovascular Health by Dr Edgardo Sandoya, past President of Uruguayan Cardiology Society and CIET Uruguay researcher.
4.    Coronaries and controversy in a smoke free Scotland by Martin Dockrell, Action on Smoking and Health, UK.
5.    Smoking Cessation:  Translating evidence to clinical practice by Dr Hayden McRobbie, Queen Mary University, London, UK.
6.    Smoking Cessation for Cardiologists by Dr. Robert Reid, Minto Prevention and Rehabilitation Center, University of Ottawa, Hearth Institute Ottawa, Canada.

The congress is for free for health practitioners around the world and held from September 1 to November 20, 2009.  It is expected to reach more than 20,000 cardiologists from more 130 countries.

The official languages are English, Spanish and Portuguese.
